U.S. Chemical Safety Board Releases Safety Video on Fatal 2021 Liquid Nitrogen Release in Georgia
The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has released a new safety video detailing its investigation into the deadly liquid nitrogen release at the Foundation Food Group (FFG) poultry processing plant in Gainesville, Georgia, on January 28, 2021. The incident resulted in the deaths of six people and serious injuries to three others. The CSB's investigation found that a bent bubbler tube in an immersion freezer caused an excessive amount of liquid nitrogen to be pumped into the freezer, exceeding its capacity. The overflowing liquid nitrogen vaporized, creating a deadly cloud in the poorly ventilated freezer room. Two maintenance workers died from asphyxiation, and four additional workers were fatally injured while attempting to respond to the incident. The video, titled 'Fatal Fog: Liquid Nitrogen Release at Foundation Food Group,' includes an animation of the events and commentary from CSB Board Member Sylvia Johnson and investigators.
