GAO Report Reveals Lengthy Investigations and Delays in DHS Whistleblower Retaliation Cases
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report indicating a significant increase in whistleblower retaliation complaints at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The report highlights that investigations into these complaints are often lengthy, with substantial delays in taking action on substantiated cases. Between fiscal years 2018 and 2025, the DHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) received approximately 236,000 complaints alleging wrongdoing, of which 3,025 were identified as whistleblower retaliation allegations and routed to the Whistleblower Protection Division (WPD). The number of retaliation complaints reviewed by the WPD surged from 75 in 2018 to 834 in 2025, with over half occurring in 2024 or 2025. Despite OIG policy requiring timely review, GAO found that 53% of investigations took more than three years to close, while only 11% were closed within one year.
