Louisiana State University Students Demand Reopening of Closed Cultural Centers
On September 14, a coalition of over seven progressive student organizations at Louisiana State University (LSU) held a press conference to protest the closure of several cultural centers. These centers, which include the African American Cultural Center, Women’s Center, Latinx Center, LGBTQ+ Center, and Multicultural Center, were closed over the summer break. Student representatives from groups such as Injustice Reform, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Feminists in Action, and the LSU chapter of the NAACP met with Executive Vice President James Dalton and Senior Vice Chancellor Joseph Messina to discuss their demands. According to Gabi DeJean of SDS, the administration cited 'eliminating redundancy and cutting costs' as reasons for the changes. After a two-hour meeting, the administration refused to reverse the closures or send an email to the student body explaining the changes.
