U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Secures Primary Victory Amidst Redistricting Challenges
U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won her primary election for Florida's 20th Congressional District by more than 22 points, virtually guaranteeing her a 12th term in Congress. Her victory came despite significant challenges, including a major redrawing of congressional district boundaries by Governor Ron DeSantis's administration, which fragmented her previous all-Broward district. The reconfigured 20th District, where she ran, now encompasses a majority of African American and Caribbean American communities in Broward County, a district historically represented by a Black lawmaker since 1993. Wasserman Schultz, who is white, faced opposition from four Black candidates who argued the district should be represented by someone with the 'lived experience' of its constituents. Her win is attributed to her long-standing career, extensive support network, and a divided opposition.
