Fire Destroys Historic Centennial Mills in Portland, Raises Safety Concerns
A significant fire engulfed the vacant Centennial Mills in Portland, leading to the collapse of all eight stories of the historic building. The fire, which broke out on Sunday afternoon, required the response of over 100 firefighters and numerous fire trucks. Due to structural concerns, firefighters were unable to enter the building and had to combat the blaze from outside. The fire caused the thick timber flooring to collapse, funneling flames and smoke upwards. The external walls remained intact, but the area was closed off due to safety concerns. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no fatalities have been reported.
