Orange County, Florida, Intensifies Mosquito Control Efforts Following Local Dengue Case
Orange County Mosquito Control crews are increasing surveillance and treatment activities in Pine Hills, Florida, after a locally acquired case of dengue was confirmed. The Florida Department of Health in Orange County reported the human case on September 2. Steve Harrison, manager of Orange County Mosquito Control, stated that the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector for dengue, is active during the day and has a short flight range, typically staying within a few blocks of its emergence point. This characteristic allows the county to concentrate its efforts in the affected Pine Hills community. Control measures include deploying surveillance traps, responding to resident reports, conducting field inspections, and utilizing reported virus activity to identify areas requiring spraying. This marks the third locally contracted dengue case in Orange County since 2024, with the previous two cases involving individuals from the same household.
