McClatchy Newspapers Face Severe Cuts Amidst Broader California News Crisis
McClatchy, once a prominent newspaper publisher, has implemented significant layoffs across its newsrooms, including the Sacramento Bee, Modesto Bee, and Fresno Bee. These cuts have resulted in the elimination of entire desks, such as the sports and opinion desks at the Sacramento Bee, and a substantial reduction in staff, with the Fresno Bee losing 41% of its journalists. The company, which was acquired by Chatham Asset Management in 2020 after filing for bankruptcy, attributes these reductions to a 41% decline in revenue over the past five years. Journalists at the Sacramento Bee have also expressed concerns about the company's use of AI tools to summarize and repackage their articles, leading some to withhold their bylines. This situation reflects a broader crisis in California's local journalism, with over 12,000 local journalists lost since 2002 and nearly 40% of U.S. local newspapers having vanished.
