Falmouth Elementary Schools Cancel Halloween Parades, Sparking Community Petition for Reversal
Falmouth elementary schools have canceled their long-standing Halloween parades and requested that students not wear costumes to school on the Friday before Halloween. This decision, communicated to families via letters from school administrators, aims to foster a more inclusive school environment where all students can participate comfortably. Additionally, the schools cited increased student absences linked to Halloween celebrations as a factor, emphasizing the priority of maintaining strong student attendance. Nick Hanney, an alumnus of North Falmouth Elementary and a father of three, initiated a petition to reverse the decision, garnering over 600 signatures by Tuesday night. Peter MacDonald, another North Falmouth alum, whose parents did not allow him to attend the parade for religious reasons 30 years ago, also supports the petition, advocating for families to have the option to participate and for a public discussion with administrators.
