Southern California Faces Prolonged Heat Wave and Fire Risks
Southern California is experiencing a significant heat wave, with a heat advisory in effect for areas including Los Angeles and Ventura counties, as well as the southern coast of Santa Barbara County, through 8 a.m. Monday (source: Los Angeles Times, 2026-07-23). Daytime temperatures are climbing into the 80s and 90s °F (27-37 °C) in the basin, with inland valleys reaching over 100 °F (38 °C). Overnight temperatures remain unusually warm, exacerbating heat-related health risks. The National Weather Service has also issued a beach hazards statement due to surf heights of 4 to 8 feet along south-facing beaches, increasing the risk of ocean drowning. Elevated fire weather conditions are expected in valleys, mountains, and desert areas due to hot temperatures and dry vegetation.
