York County Commissioners Advocate for Abolishing Elected Treasurer Position, Citing Professionalization Needs
York County Commissioners are urging voters to approve a referendum on November 3 to abolish the part-time elected treasurer position and replace it with an appointed treasurer. This move is driven by the county's current financial structure, which includes a professional finance director, finance manager, and a four-person finance staff, all of whom have earned the county an 'A' grade from auditors. Commissioners argue that the elected treasurer role serves little purpose, as state law only requires the individual to be a county resident, with no financial qualifications. The current treasurer, Democrat Stacy Kilroy, appointed by Governor Janet Mills in May 2024 after Bobby Mills' resignation, is not seeking re-election. If the referendum passes, the election for treasurer, where Mills is the sole candidate, would become moot, and the County Commissioners would appoint a qualified individual.
