Tropical Storm Rachel Brings Coastal Flood Risks to SoCal
Tropical Storm Rachel, downgraded from a hurricane, is expected to bring significant coastal flooding risks and rain to Southern California this weekend. The National Weather Service warns that south-facing beaches, including Long Beach Peninsula, Malibu, and Ventura, are particularly vulnerable due to elevated sea levels caused by a Kelvin wave, a phenomenon linked to the ongoing El Niño. Sea levels could rise by 6 to 12 inches, increasing the threat of beach erosion and flooding. Rainfall is anticipated between Sunday night and Monday, with totals ranging from 0.25 to 0.75 inches in most areas. Winds are also expected to pick up, with gusts reaching 20 to 35 mph. This weather event comes as forecasters predict this El Niño could be one of the strongest on record, potentially leading to more extreme weather in the coming months.
