Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio Settles Malibu Sand Removal Lawsuit, Donates Beachfront Property
Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has reached a settlement in a 2024 lawsuit concerning the improper removal of sand and other materials from a Malibu beach. The lawsuit alleged that a company hired by Attanasio, JILK Heavy Construction, excavated large quantities of sand for a construction project at his beachfront property. As part of the settlement, Attanasio will donate an undeveloped $2 million beachfront property in Malibu and is required to restore the area where the excavation occurred. The California Coastal Commission approved the settlement, which also mandates the removal of a private staircase and rock wall that allegedly blocked public access. The lawsuit, filed by Attanasio's neighbor James Kohlberg, claimed that heavy machinery was used in tidal zones, leading to oil leaks that exposed marine life to hazardous chemicals and affected the Point Dume State Marine Conservation Area. Attanasio's attorney had previously stated that all necessary permits were secured and contractors vetted.
