Global Polio Eradication Initiative Continues Efforts to Eliminate Disease Worldwide
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a collaborative effort involving organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is actively working to eradicate polio globally. This initiative focuses on vaccination campaigns, surveillance, and outbreak response. Significant progress has been made, with polio cases worldwide reduced by over 99% since the 1980s, when 350,000 children were paralyzed annually across 125 countries. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell highlighted the scale and complexity of these efforts, particularly in the last two polio-endemic countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
