Canadian Wildfire Smoke Chokes U.S. Cities, Raises Health Concerns
For the third time in four years, smoke from Canadian wildfires has blanketed parts of the United States, turning skies over cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York into a haze. Over 800 wildfires are currently burning across Canada, with smoke affecting air quality in the Midwest and beyond. Air quality in some areas ranked among the worst globally, and over 100 million Americans were under health alerts. The fires have also contributed to significant carbon emissions, with Canada’s 2023 wildfires alone releasing 640 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Experts attribute the severity of these fires to insufficient forest management and climate change, with both Canada and the U.S. underinvesting in preventive measures like prescribed burns and forest thinning.
