States Oppose EEOC Plan to End Workforce Demographic Reporting Requirements
A coalition of eight state and local civil rights agencies, including those from Illinois, Oregon, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and the District of Columbia, has formally opposed the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) proposed rescission of federal workforce reporting requirements, specifically the EEO-1 report. These agencies co-authored an August 24 letter arguing that eliminating this data collection would hinder efforts to identify and investigate employment discrimination. For sixty years, EEO workforce data has provided federal, state, and local agencies, employers, and policymakers with crucial information on workforce representation by race, sex, job category, and other characteristics. The data, which does not identify individual employees, serves as a baseline for examining disparities across various industries, occupations, and regions.
