Donavan McKinney Defeats Shri Thanedar in Michigan's 13th Congressional District Primary
State Representative Donavan McKinney has defeated U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan's 13th Congressional District. This primary was closely watched as a test of the Democratic Socialists' influence against incumbents. McKinney, backed by prominent progressives such as U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, secured the victory with a campaign focused on grassroots support and progressive policies. Thanedar, who had the backing of U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, emphasized his efforts against President Trump and his administration. Despite their agreement on issues like Medicare for All, McKinney and Thanedar diverged on U.S. foreign policy toward Israel, with McKinney advocating for an end to U.S. military support for Israel. Thanedar, an Indian immigrant and former pharmaceutical entrepreneur, had previously won his seat in 2022, marking a significant shift in Detroit's congressional representation.
