Straight-Line Winds, Not Tornadoes, Caused Lansing-Area Storm Damage
The National Weather Service has confirmed that the storm damage in the Lansing area on September 3 was caused by straight-line winds rather than tornadoes. However, two tornadoes were identified in southeast Michigan: an EF-0 in Lincoln Park and an EF-2 in Detroit, which traveled across Belle Isle and into Ontario. Michigan has experienced 29 confirmed tornadoes in 2026, with most being EF-0 or EF-1 in intensity.
