Detroit Next Super PAC Influences Michigan Legislative Races with Significant Funding
A super political action committee (super PAC) named Detroit Next, funded by the owner of the Ambassador Bridge and an organization tied to DTE Energy, has spent over $100,000 to influence primary races in Wayne County for the Michigan Legislature. The super PAC has supported candidates for six different state House or Senate positions, including Democratic Senate candidates Korey Hall and Justin Onwenu. Hall, who previously served in Governor Gretchen Whitmer's administration, is in a primary race in the 3rd Senate District, while Onwenu is running against former state Rep. Abraham Aiyash in the 1st Senate District. Aiyash criticized Onwenu for benefiting from funds connected to DTE Energy, a major utility company. Onwenu, however, has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters and has disavowed dark money spending.
