Scientists Develop New Method to Identify Major Earthquake Zones Along Pacific Ring of Fire
A team of scientists from the University of California, Riverside, has developed a new method to identify areas along major faults where stress is accumulating, indicating a higher likelihood of major earthquakes. Published in Geophysical Research Letters, this research focuses on subduction zones, which are responsible for some of the Earth's largest earthquakes and can generate devastating tsunamis. The method utilizes GPS measurements to track subtle ground movements and an algorithm to pinpoint 'locked' sections of faults, known as asperities, where energy is building up. The team successfully tested this approach in the Kamchatka subduction zone in eastern Russia, where a significant earthquake recently occurred in an area identified by their model as having accumulated strain. While the method can identify high-risk areas, it cannot predict the exact timing of an earthquake.
