Detroit Duo Charged in $4 Million Unemployment Fraud Scheme
Shawn Carter and Danielle Thomas from Metro Detroit have been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. They are accused of filing over 400 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims across 32 states, totaling more than $4 million. The scheme involved using stolen identities to obtain unemployment benefits, which were then converted to cash via Bank of America debit cards. Text messages between the two reveal their panic as the scheme began to unravel, leading to their arrest by federal authorities.
