Detroit assesses damage after EF-2 tornado hits
The City of Detroit is continuing its response to the EF-2 tornado that struck the city's east side on September 3, 2026. According to the Buildings, Safety Engineer and Environmental Department (BSEED), 101 properties were damaged, including 55 businesses, 24 single-family homes, 21 multi-family properties, and one manufactured home. Of these, 20 businesses and five homes sustained major damage. The hardest-hit areas include McDougall-Hunt, Islandview, West Village, Indian Village, East Village, Pingree Park, and Belle Isle. Mayor Mary Sheffield declared a local state of emergency to expedite resource mobilization. Cleanup efforts have been extensive, with 295 fallen trees removed, 83 streets cleared, and 342 tons of debris hauled away. This tornado marks the first to hit Detroit since 1997.
