Arrest Made in 2010 Aurora Infant Homicide Case After Cold Case Review
Nearly 16 years after the death of 11-month-old Michael Ortiz in Aurora, Illinois, an arrest has been made in connection with the infant's homicide. Spiros Elias, 44, of Burlington, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The case began on December 17, 2010, when police and firefighters responded to a report of an unconscious and non-breathing baby. Michael Ortiz was transported to a hospital and died the following day. An autopsy by the DuPage County Coroner's Office determined the child's injuries were consistent with abuse, ruling the death a homicide. The investigation remained unsolved for over a decade until the Aurora Police Department reopened the cold case in 2024. Detectives reviewed original reports, witness interviews, medical records, and physical evidence, and conducted new interviews.
