Governor DeSantis' Tax Plan May Lead to Service Cuts in Florida
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a significant expansion of the state's homestead exemption, which could lead to one of the largest property tax cuts in Florida's history. The proposal, titled 'Save Our Homes From Excessive Property Taxes,' was passed by the state legislature and will be decided by voters in November. The plan aims to increase the current $50,000 homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. While DeSantis claims this could eliminate property taxes for 60% of homeowners, independent analysis suggests the actual figure is closer to 28%. The proposal also includes a reduction in the cap on annual assessment increases for nonhomestead properties from 10% to 5%. However, the plan could result in a significant revenue shortfall for local governments, estimated to grow to $8.4 billion annually, potentially affecting services like mosquito control.
