New York State Revises Import Restrictions for Companion Animals Amid Screwworm Threat
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has updated its import restrictions for pets entering the state due to the detection of the New World Screwworm in Texas and New Mexico. The revised order permits the entry of cats and dogs from affected areas into New York, provided they receive an FDA-approved treatment within 14 days before arrival. This measure aims to prevent the spread of the invasive pest while allowing the movement of rescue animals. The order also mandates additional veterinary testing and certification of good health for animals from infested regions. The New World Screwworm poses a significant threat to livestock, pets, wildlife, and occasionally humans, as its larvae feed on living tissue, causing severe wounds and economic damage.
