Chautauqua County Humane Society Temporarily Halts Dog and Cat Intake Amid Overcrowding and Illness Outbreaks
The Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS) has announced a temporary halt on all dog and cat intake due to severe overcrowding and the presence of multiple serious illnesses among its animal population. The shelter recently took in over 30 cats from a single home, which, while not a case of cruelty or neglect, significantly strained their resources. These cats are described as timid and require extensive care before becoming available for adoption. Compounding the issue, some of these new arrivals have tested positive for ringworm, necessitating isolation and specialized treatment. Additionally, the CCHS is managing cases of pan-leukopenia in cats and parvovirus in puppies, all of which demand considerable time, attention, and strict separation protocols.
