Diabetic Teen Dies in Unlicensed Missouri Foster Home After Placement Error
Korbin Papadopoulos, a 17-year-old with type 1 diabetes and autism, died 24 days after being placed in a Missouri foster home that was not licensed to care for children with his medical needs. On May 13, Macon County Children’s Division workers, after 5 p.m., located what they believed to be a suitable foster home for Korbin, who required constant assistance with his diabetes management. However, on May 19, it was discovered that the foster parent was only licensed to care for relatives and was not equipped to manage diabetes. Despite the foster parent requesting Korbin's removal twice, he remained in the home. Korbin died on June 6 from diabetic ketoacidosis. Police records indicate a doctor's note from April had already identified Korbin as being at high risk for this condition.
