Sacramento Waste Management Workers Overcome Union-Busting to Join Teamsters Local 150
Waste Management workers in Sacramento, California, including 69 drivers, mechanics, and welders, have successfully voted to join Teamsters Local 150. This victory comes after what the union described as a "vicious union-busting campaign" by Waste Management, the largest solid waste and recycling company in North America. According to Francisco Covarrubias, a seven-year Waste Management worker, the company employed various tactics, such as forcing employees to attend captive audience meetings and spending significant amounts on union busters, to deter unionization. Despite these efforts, the workers remained resolute, with Covarrubias stating that the company's aggression only reinforced their need for strong union representation. This marks the first time waste workers in the city of Sacramento have joined the Teamsters, and Local 150 aims to expand its organizing efforts throughout the city.
