Springfield Fire Department Launches BEACON Project for Mental Health and Substance Use Crises
The city of Springfield, Illinois, and its Fire Department have launched the BEACON (Bridging Emergency and Community Outreach Network) Project, introducing 'Rescue 1,' a dedicated apparatus for responding to mental health and substance use crises. This initiative marks the first time the Springfield Fire Department (SFD) will have a specialized vehicle for such calls. Twelve Springfield firefighters underwent specialized training for the BEACON Project, with plans for all personnel to receive similar training eventually. U.S. Representative Nikki Budzinski (D-Springfield) has also designated a second unit for the project in the federal budget, indicating further expansion. Mayor Misty Buscher and Springfield Fire Chief Nick Zummo emphasized the historic nature of this new approach to emergency response.
