Illinois Governor Establishes AI Cabinet and Enacts AI Safety Measures Act
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 315, known as the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, which mandates new reporting standards and annual audits for large AI models generating over $500 million in annual revenue and trained with significant computing power. This legislation, effective in 2028, aims to address the potential for AI models to be used for large-scale harm, such as creating chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons or facilitating cyber-attacks. Additionally, Governor Pritzker issued an executive order to establish an AI Cabinet. This unpaid group, comprising experts and representatives from various state agencies, will formulate policy proposals through 2027.
