Two Men Die in Tomales Bay Canoeing Incident, Marking Second Fatality in Five Months
Two men in their 30s were found dead in Tomales Bay after their midnight canoe trip on Sunday. The Marin County Fire Department received a missing persons report at 10:39 AM, initiating a multi-agency search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Marin County Fire, and Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The bodies were discovered miles apart, with one near Toms Point and the other approximately a mile north of Hog Island. This incident follows another fatal canoeing accident in March, where a 37-year-old woman drowned and her partner suffered hypothermia after their canoe capsized. The conditions surrounding the latest incident, including whether the men wore life jackets or where they launched from, are currently unknown. Cold-water immersion in Tomales Bay can rapidly lead to cold-water shock and severe hypothermia, incapacitating even strong swimmers within minutes, according to safety advisories from the National Park Service and Coast Guard.
