New York Sues Kalshi for Operating Illegal Gambling Platform, Seeks Court Intervention
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have filed a lawsuit against KalshiEX, LLC, accusing the company of running an illegal gambling operation through its prediction market platform. Launched in 2021, Kalshi allows users to bet on the outcomes of various events, including sports and elections. The lawsuit claims that Kalshi's operations meet the legal definition of gambling, as the outcomes are uncertain and beyond the control of the bettors. Despite this, Kalshi has not obtained the necessary license from the New York State Gaming Commission, thereby avoiding tax obligations that fund public services. The lawsuit seeks to halt Kalshi's operations, impose fines, and require the company to forfeit illegal gains and pay restitution to affected users.
