Broome County Executive Explores Redevelopment of Historic Castle on the Hill into Housing
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar is spearheading an initiative to redevelop the historic Castle on the Hill property in Binghamton, New York, with a primary focus on converting its long-vacant buildings into housing. The Castle on the Hill, which once housed the nation's first inebriate asylum and has been empty since 1993, is part of a larger 260-acre campus. Garnar, in partnership with the state, the city of Binghamton, and the Industrial Development Agency, is exploring the feasibility of repurposing the castle and other unused structures on the site. This effort comes as developers are already showing interest in the property, which is recognized for its historical significance and extensive acreage. The county plans to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the campus and its buildings to assess their condition and determine what can be saved, repurposed, or would need to be removed before any construction begins.
