Former Smyrna USPS Employee Sentenced for Stealing Over $1 Million in Mail
Melissa McAfee, a former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier who operated a route in Smyrna, Georgia, has been sentenced to federal prison for stealing checks and gift cards totaling over $1 million from the mail. McAfee, 44, from Jonesboro, received a two-year prison sentence followed by two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing stolen mail in May. Federal prosecutors stated that McAfee was active in the Smyrna area from 2022 to 2024. During this period, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General received numerous complaints about stolen mail along her route. An investigation, which included surveillance footage, confirmed McAfee's involvement in taking mail. Agents found 145 stolen checks and 37 gift cards from Smyrna customers during a search of her home. McAfee was confronted in September 2024 and subsequently resigned from her position.
