30 Lions and Tigers Relocated from Argentine Zoo to Sanctuaries in Colorado and South Africa
Thirty lions and tigers, previously held in cramped conditions at the now-closed Luján Zoo in Argentina, are being relocated to sanctuaries. This significant animal welfare effort involves sending seven lions and eight tigers to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, while six lions and nine tigers will go to Lionsrock in South Africa. The animals were recovered from the former zoo, located about 43 miles outside Buenos Aires, and transported in crates. Some animals were conditioned to enter the crates voluntarily, while others required sedation, including two tigers moved in canvas slings. This mission is described by Luciana D'Abramo, program director for Four Paws, as one of the largest relocations of captive big cats globally. The Luján Zoo was shut down in 2020 due to safety and animal welfare concerns, particularly its practice of allowing visitors to interact with big cats for photos.
