St. Mary of the Assumption Basilica in Ohio Showcases Historic Beauty and Community Devotion
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption in Marietta, Ohio, is highlighted for its architectural grandeur and deep historical roots within the local Catholic community. Originally established as St. Mary’s Church in 1853, the cornerstone for the current, more elaborate edifice was laid in 1904. The church was officially consecrated on December 12, 1909, by Bishop James Hartley, who celebrated the first pontifical High Mass in Marietta, with local newspapers praising its "marvelous beauty." It was later designated a basilica on June 13, 2013.
