Nashville Democrat Sues Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Over Committee Suspension and Restrictions
State Senator Charlane Oliver, a Nashville Democrat, has filed a lawsuit against Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican and Senate speaker. The lawsuit stems from McNally's decision to suspend Oliver from the Government Operations Committee and reassign her to the less powerful State and Local Government Committee. Additionally, Oliver has been barred from receiving a per diem for legislative work and using state funds for legislative conferences. These actions followed Oliver's protest during a May special legislative session, where she stood on her Senate desk and unfurled a banner to protest the redrawing of Tennessee’s U.S. congressional map. This redistricting effort, which divided the predominantly Black city of Memphis across three congressional seats, was designed to favor Republicans and potentially secure all nine of Tennessee’s U.S. House districts.
