Representative Jan Schakowsky Encouraged Maura Sullivan's Congressional Bid in Illinois' 6th District
In spring 2018, Representative Jan Schakowsky, a long-serving Democratic congresswoman from Evanston, Illinois, encouraged Maura Sullivan to run for Congress in Illinois' 6th district. Sullivan, an Evanston native and Marine Corps captain who served in the Iraq War, had been considered a potential candidate for two Illinois congressional seats prior to the 2018 midterm elections. Schakowsky's encouragement was specifically for a run against Republican Representative Peter Roskam. Despite this encouragement, Sullivan ultimately decided not to run in Illinois. Instead, businessman Sean Casten successfully defeated Roskam in November 2018, flipping the seat for the Democrats. Sullivan later ran for New Hampshire's 1st congressional district seat, where she lost in the Democratic primary to Chris Pappas.
