Attorney Alleges Federal Agent's Deadly Force in Memphis Shooting Was Unjustified Based on Body Cam Footage
An attorney representing the family of Jonah Neal, Andre Wharton, claims that body camera footage indicates a federal agent was unjustified in using deadly force against Neal in Memphis in late May. Neal, 25, was shot inside his home by an agent from Homeland Security Investigations, part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, after a 911 call reported he was experiencing a mental breakdown. The agent was part of a federal crime-fighting task force deployed to Memphis under the direction of President Trump and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee. Wharton stated that the footage, viewed by him and Neal's mother, shows Neal did not pose an imminent threat. He noted that Neal's mother could be heard in the video informing agents of her son's mental crisis. The footage reportedly shows agents at the front door while Neal was at a significant distance, and one agent allegedly stated Neal was wielding a knife, not a firearm, moments before another agent opened fire.
