America's Saltiest Rivers Revealed
A recent study highlights the saltiest rivers in the United States, with Texas and Oklahoma leading the list due to their unique geological history. Rivers such as the Salt Fork Brazos River and South Fork Wichita River exhibit salinity levels comparable to seawater, driven by groundwater dissolving ancient Permian evaporite deposits. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) monitored these rivers between 2017 and 2024, recording total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations as high as 35,862 mg/L. These findings underscore the impact of limited rainfall and natural salt springs in shaping the chemistry of these waterways. The study also explores how salinity varies within river systems, with downstream flows diluting mineral concentrations significantly.
