Rachel's Remnants Bring Flood Risk to Southwest
The remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel are bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Desert Southwest, including areas such as Las Vegas, Southern California, and parts of Wyoming. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 5 inches, with localized higher amounts, increasing the risk of flash flooding in normally dry creeks, arroyos, slot canyons, and urban areas. Meanwhile, colder air from a front moving in from the Northwest is combining with Rachel's moisture, leading to significant snowfall in the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains. In Montana, snowfall totals have already exceeded a foot in some areas. Additionally, Hurricane Simon, a Category 2 storm, is impacting southwestern Mexico with catastrophic winds, life-threatening storm surges, and up to 30 inches of rain, posing a severe risk of landslides in mountainous regions.
