Pittsburgh Experiences Surge in Tornado Activity Amid Shifting Tornado Alley
The Pittsburgh area has recorded 21 confirmed tornadoes so far this year, more than double its annual average of 10, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists Trey Fulbright and Ron Smiley attribute this increase to warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels, which create ideal conditions for tornado formation. Additionally, advancements in technology, such as drones and improved radar systems, have enhanced the ability to confirm tornado occurrences. Experts also note a geographic shift in Tornado Alley, traditionally centered in the Midwest and Plains, now extending into parts of Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This year marks one of the top three years for tornado activity in the region since 1950, with similar spikes observed in recent years.
