McGraw Hill to Integrate Student Research into National Literacy Curriculum
McGraw Hill, a prominent learning science company based in Columbus, Ohio, will incorporate research conducted by two 8th-grade students, Mary McCormick and Kendall Peruzzini, into its Achieve3000 Literacy program. This program, designed to enhance reading growth and Lexile scores, is utilized by students in grades 3-12 across all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. McCormick and Peruzzini's research, which gained national recognition, focused on identifying an unmarked Civil War soldier's grave and involved extensive primary source investigation. Their work included examining census and pension records, Alms House ledgers, town death records, early photographs, and Civil War enlistment records. This collaborative effort with various community organizations, such as Orleans County, the Town of Barre, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Veterans Administration, led to the approval and installation of a headstone for the soldier.
