American Red Cross Declares National Blood Supply Crisis Amid Low Donation Levels
The American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply crisis, marking only the second time in its history that such a declaration has been made. This crisis is attributed to a significant drop in blood donations, which have reached a four-year summer low. The shortage poses a threat to the availability of lifesaving blood for emergency surgeries, accident victims, and cancer treatments. The Red Cross has reported that inventories, particularly of type O blood, are under severe strain. The organization has urged eligible donors to make appointments to donate blood as soon as possible. The crisis has been exacerbated by extreme heat, poor air quality, and widespread foodborne illnesses, which have reduced donor turnout.
