Ohio Faces Record Tornadoes, Flooding, and Heat in August 2026
Ohio experienced an unprecedented series of extreme weather events in August 2026, including over 20 tornadoes, severe flooding, and a prolonged heat wave (The Lantern, 2026-09-08). According to Aaron Wilson, Ohio's State Climatologist, the state typically sees 22 tornadoes annually, but this number was nearly matched in just one month. Tornadoes struck areas such as downtown Columbus, Clintonville, and Old Towne East, while severe flooding impacted west-central Ohio, Perry County, and Hocking County. Additionally, August 2026 was the wettest on record since 1878, with an average rainfall of 9.94 inches. A heat wave also gripped the region, with temperatures in the high 80s to 90s °F (31-32 °C), making outdoor activities challenging for residents and students.
