Carriers of this mutation were found to have a 25-fold higher risk of lung cancer compared to individuals without it. Among those who have never smoked, the odds of developing lung cancer were 62 times higher for mutation carriers. The study analyzed data from over 3.3 million people and found no increased risk for 17 other cancers. Most U.S. carriers of this mutation were traced to a shared ancestry linked to British and Irish settlers in Southern Appalachia approximately 200-225 years ago, with the mutation being more common in certain parts of this region.

As a result, nearly 88% of Iowa is now free from dry conditions, marking an increase of almost two percent from the previous week. The U.S. Drought Monitor's data reflects conditions up to Tuesday and does not yet account for rainfall received since then.
