Governor Hochul Announces Completion of $6 Million Emergency Shelter in Chautauqua County to Aid Domestic Violence Survivors
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the completion of Anew Center, a new 7-unit, 19-bed emergency shelter in Chautauqua County, New York. This $6 million project is designed to provide support and services to survivors of domestic violence and their families, particularly those experiencing homelessness. The project received $4.4 million from the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's (OTDA) Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. Anew Center replaces the Salvation Army of Jamestown’s previous 13-bed shelter, which was not ADA-compliant and required extensive repairs. The new facility is purpose-built with full ADA accessibility, private bathrooms and showers in each unit, enhanced security features, and on-site space for case managers, family resource specialists, and prevention/education staff. Governor Hochul also issued a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York State and directed state landmarks to be illuminated in purple.
