Cincinnati City Deal Limits Kroger Protest Times Amid Small Business Complaints
Protests outside Kroger’s downtown headquarters in Cincinnati, which have been ongoing throughout the summer, will now be subject to new time restrictions and rules. This development follows a deal brokered by the city in response to complaints from nearby small businesses and residents regarding noise and disruption. The demonstrations, initiated by the group Animal Equality in May, are aimed at pressuring Kroger to source cage-free animal products, a campaign that followed similar efforts in Europe. Janine De Iorio, a local business owner, reported that the protests intensified to the point where noise from megaphones and whistles disrupted her business and prevented customers from using her patio. City Council member Mark Jeffreys facilitated a neighborhood meeting to address these concerns. Under the new agreement, protests will be limited to a window between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and only megaphones will be permitted.
