Ohio Lawmakers Push for Child Marriage Ban Amid Vinton County Endangerment Case
An ongoing child endangerment case in Vinton County, Ohio, has intensified interest in a proposed bill to ban child marriage in the state. Authorities discovered 16 children living in poor conditions during a search related to another investigation. The mother, Elizabeth Siders, married at 15, highlighting the issue of underage marriage. Ohio Senate Bill 341, introduced by Senators Bill DeMora and Bill Blessing, seeks to set the minimum marriage age at 18. Currently, Ohio allows 17-year-olds to marry with court approval if the partner is no more than four years older. The bill has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee but awaits a full Senate vote. The case underscores the potential negative consequences of child marriage, as emphasized by advocates like Fraidy Reiss of Unchained At Last, who argue that child marriage is a human rights abuse.
