New Jersey's Voter Registration Error Registers 6,600 Noncitizens, Sparks Federal Inquiry
New Jersey officials have acknowledged a significant error in the state's voter-registration system, which led to approximately 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. This issue arose from a software error in the Motor Vehicle Commission's system, managed by contractor IDEMIA, which failed to prevent noncitizens from being registered when they applied for or renewed driver's licenses or state IDs. Despite indicating they were not U.S. citizens, these individuals were still prompted to register to vote. Governor Mikie Sherrill disclosed the issue in July 2026, attributing the error to a software malfunction, although IDEMIA claims the system functioned as designed. The error was corrected in June 2024, but the registrations were not reviewed or removed until recently. The U.S. Department of Justice has requested detailed information on these individuals, but New Jersey has refused to comply, citing privacy concerns.
