Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang Pleads Guilty to Acting as Foreign Agent for China
Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, California, has entered a plea agreement with federal prosecutors after being charged with acting as an illegal foreign agent for China. According to the unsealed court documents, Wang admitted to promoting Chinese propaganda in the United States between 2020 and 2022. She collaborated with her then-fiancé, Yaoning 'Mike' Sun, to operate a website called U.S. News Center, which was used to disseminate content directed by Chinese government officials. Wang's activities included posting articles on sensitive topics such as China's stance on the Xinjiang issue and reporting back to Chinese officials with metrics on the articles' reach. The plea agreement outlines that Wang did not disclose her actions were directed by the Chinese government. She is scheduled for arraignment in Los Angeles, facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
